Vegetable oil = palm oil in many cases

May 21, 2013 | Conservation, Food & nutrition

Lifehacker had a good post today drawing to people’s attention that it is permissible in Australia for palm oil to be simply labelled as “vegetable oil” on ingredient lists.

As most would know, palm oil by and large is produced in a non-sustainable manner, with direct impacts on the local environment in areas in which it is harvested. Less direct, but equally important, is the effect it has on wildlife, including the orangutan populations.

Another classic example of the need to be careful when choosing packaged food items.
